SOCIAL PROJECT BC-SE4 IN BRAZIL

Volunteer Project in Brazil

BC-SE4

Description:

The association in which this volunteer project takes place was created in Curitiba in 1996. It is a unique and very valuable association that takes children into custody after abuse or violence from their parents. The children, who range in age from new-born to 12 years, are cared for while awaiting either return to their family unit, or adoption. Recently, the organization opened a second home; they now have one house hosting approximately 13 babies, and one house hosting 10 children ranging from 2-12 old. The organization, which is run entirely on a voluntary basis, provides the children with a high level of care, ensuring they receive education and essential requirements such as dental, medical and psychological assistance, and speech therapy. The association relies on monetary donations, donations of products and services, and also donations of second-hand clothing which they sell at their monthly bazaar to raise money. They rely heavily on volunteers giving their time to provide assistance in many areas but essentially to provide love to these young children who for various reasons, have suffered abuse.

Activities:

The demands of the volunteer will vary each day according to the needs of the children.
Volunteers are welcome to participate in different activities with the children according to their abilities, and for this, a good sense of creativity is a useful tool.

Activities could typically include any of the following:

  • Promote recreational activities, such as playing with toys, promoting handicrafts and art workshops (painting, theatre, dance)
  • Tutor/help with homework
  • Teach basic skills of English
  • Babysit

The volunteer organization uses the following as a guideline; however, exceptions can be made depending on experience, language skills and enthusiasm:
  • Minimum age: 18 years-old
  • Minimum commitment: 4 weeks
  •  Minimum Portuguese level: Beginner
  • Compassion and genuine interest in helping others

Minimum:

The minimum time requirement for this project is 4 weeks of volunteering. This can however, be extended, with either Portuguese classes or extra weeks of volunteering, according to the individual wishes and needs of the volunteer.

Work Schedule:

Students can volunteer during the morning or afternoon. During the morning, children older than 5 are at school. Some of them also have sports activities after lunch, sponsored by partner schools. Volunteers are required for a minimum of 15 hours/week.

Volunteers at the beginner’s level of Portuguese are welcome on this project, however, we highly recommend the optional language program prior to your project. This will provide a thorough basic knowledge of the language and the necessary vocabulary for good communication.
